Default 2000 Bravada Transfer Case Question

What does the encoder motor do on the 2nd gen all wheel drive Bravada? Isn't it always in all wheel drive?
Thanks,

The NV136 transfer case is a single speed, variable power transfer case that can vary the power from 0/100 to 50/50 front/rear. The encoder motor applies pressure to a viscous coupling (wet clutch) that in turn sends power to the front axle. The amount of power transferred to the front depends on the pressure applied to the clutch in the transfer case.

The older Borg-Warner AWD transfer cases were a dedicated torque split transfer case that only sent around 35% of the power forward.
