4.3 Squeaking real bad after hitting rev limiter in 1st gear
I was driving down the road like normal and i usually downshift to slow down and i got distracted. when i took off i was still in 1st gear doing like 50 and hit the rev limiter. i shifted into drive but it wouldnt accelerate. after coming to a stop it died and wouldnt start for hours. i got it started again but it has a weird squeak now. oil smells slightly burned, and distributor gear was worn down pretty good. It is auto trans btw. according to the gage it never went over 210 degrees so it didnt over heat. what are the possible things that i could have done to it? I was thinking i probably threw a bearing. i have the whole front end takin off, probably going to scrap the vehicle but i think this motor would be a good start for a first time rebuild since it runs. might drop it into a s10 later if i can figure it out. thanks for the help

Rev limiters ars a wonderful myth. Its especially popular in the motorcycle world.
It's twin myth is " valve float" and what it really is is the ignition system just running out if energy from too short a dwell period not charging the coil. As to the dustributor gear being worn down the engine is junk and no point in discussing it further. |
it still runs thats why i was wondering whats wrong with it. im going to strip it down and potentially rebuild it, i was just trying to gain knowledge on where i should look for the problem.

How is the distributor gear related to this issue?
you need to fashion an engine stethescope from a tire iron or big screw driver and locate the source of the noise. Belts, alternator, water pump, engine locations. Be careful with all the spinning and rotating stuff. Was the oil pressure affected? Are there any codes? when it would not start did you check for proper spark and fuel pressure? George |
i pulled the distributor because the sound is comming from the back side of the engine thats how i discovered that it was worn down.
it has spark and fuel just fine. everything was fine up until i was doing 50 in first gear. im thinking i just threw a bearing and the distributor being worn was just worn from age but i was looking for other suggestions. oil pressure is fine no codes |
