96 Blazer Rear Drum Backing Plate -- No Longer Available?
 

Hello everyone,

I need to replace the backing plate for the Rear Drums of my 96 Blazer. It looks like the part has been discontinued by GM and there is none available in the Aftermarket...Really? I can't believe that an essential component of the Drum Braking System is no longer available. I've checked Autozone, RockAuto, LMC Truck, NAPA....nobody sells it.

I guess I'll have to go to a junkyard....anyone else have any ideas or had to replace a Drum Backing Plate recently? My truck has 260,000 miles and the drums are periodically sticking. I have replaced every other component and I now think the backing plates are worn such that the shoes are not sliding right.

Any ideas on where to buy these parts?

I am not sure if a 91 backing plate is the same as a 96 but LMC Truck has them for the 91. I was on another forum for the same issue and a comment was made that 85 to 97 uses the same backing plated. A local GM dealer should be able to confirm what years are compatible.

Here is a possibility:
The backing plates are designed to use #514 shoes, which GM has used since the mid 70's. They are also used on your 96 Blazer. There are two different backing plates: The only difference is the way the wheel cylinder mounts to the backing plate. The early ones used a clip:

and the later ones were bolted on, like yours are. Either style will work, but you will need to change your wheel cylinders to the clip style instead of bolting on. Tru-Torque Drum Brake Wheel Cylinder W37625: Choose the best Brake Wheel Cylinder at Advance Auto Parts

I haven't seen the bolt on style backing plates available for quite a while. Somebody probably has them, the question is where.

I know that this post is from many years ago but I’m having the same problem right now.
I have a 97 blazer with 4wd
I have also found out using this forum that my rear drum brake backing plate is the bolt on version, where you bolt on the wheel cylinder instead of the clip version. I’ve scoured this whole forum and as much of google as I could trying to find the right backing plate but I have had no luck. I’ve gotten the most valuable information from this forum so I thought I might as well make a post asking for help.
anyway, I can’t find this backing plate and I thought that maybe someone found the solution since I’ve seen a couple posts about this problem
help would be greatly appreciated.
