'99 4x4 Blazer - ABS activates for no reason, ABS light goes on and off

when driving very slow sometimes the ABS kicks in.........very annoying.

also the ABS light at times goes on and off.

hubs are fairly new, within a year or so. I have had ABS come on before due to a worn out hub. This time it feels very different.....

what am I looking to replace here? ABS sensors on the hub? speed sensors (where are those located? are they same thing as ABS sensors?) ABS computer? (where is that located?)

I pulled the fuse for now but love to have ABS back in business.

....

How does it feel different? Your CURRENT symptoms are classic dirty sensor or sensor distance from exciter wheel.
Only a guesstimate, but you know what you paid for your hubs, And you know the price ranges.
What do you think the relative chances are of failure between the products you chose from?

how does it feel different?

last time around when ABS came on for no reason it felt like normally operating ABS, i was still able to stop, there wasnt an obscene amount or force of "push back".

this time around I cant stop at all, brake pedal jumps right back.

which one of the sensors are you talking about? ABS or speed sensor?

Tinted 03-12-2012 07:59 PM

is there any way to see which one of the sensors or hubs it could be? could I disconnect one sensor at a time from each hub? would that tell me anything?

I dunno.. can you turn wheels by hand when front end off ground? {I dont know cuz I have a bravada}
If you can, go to DIY and find the post on testing with a DVM
Not likely the vss types.

ABS capable scan tool will retrieve the DTC's, post 'em here. Don't start unplugging stuff, it will enter a DTC for each thing you unplug and you won't know what's causing the problem.

Tinted 03-12-2012 08:52 PM

1. where do i find an ABS cable scan tool?

2. what are DTC's?

Captain Hook 03-12-2012 09:03 PM

Most auto parts stores sell ABS capable scan tools, some rent them, you'll have to check around locally. The scan tools that the auto parts stores use for your "Check Engine" light are not capable of retrieving ABS DTC's

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code

hey Captain Hook, the ABS kicks in when going at a very slow speed, like super slow. What do you guess my issue is here?

I'd rather just go and replace the part then have some shop rip me off just to give me codes.
