2000 2wheel driver blazer. when we turn the ac on it does not blow cold air. we are sure the clutch is bad it is rattling and making a lot of noise. however about 3-5 minutes of running the ac the compressor gets hot and then the engine shuts off. any idea why and how to fix it. we are figuring that we will have to replace it. how much refidgerent will it take to fill it back up.

there should be a sticker under the hood that says how much r-134 it will take to recharge it.
when you say the engine shuts off, do you mean the engine stalls and dies? or just quits running all of a sudden? it could be that the compressor has eaten itself on the inside. if that has happened, you also need to change the orifice tube and clean the system out. if you dont, you will have the same problem in short order. i would take it to a shop to have them clean it out and recharge it, rather than buying the stuff off the shelf and doing it yourself. it will cost more, but they can also do a leak check and then you will have some sort of warranty on the compressor. they arent cheap, they run around 300 or so.
