Accessing License Plate Bulbs 99 Blazer

I'm wanting to replace the two license plate bulbs on my 1999 4WD 4D Blazer LS. I've looked on several other sites including this one, and they all say to get up under the back of the car and look towards the license plate, and then you can access the bulbs there. From there, I can SEE the bulbs, but there are huge metal bars/plates blocking me from being able to reach the bulbs. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Its hard to do, but you have to squeeze your hand through and get to them. My buddy took his tailgate off to do them and he said that helped but its not that bad. You just have to have small enough hands.

Oh okay hadn't thought about taking the tailgate off, I'll take a look at it, thanks!

Not a problem. Just be sure they work before you put em back in, if you have them in and they dont work, you have to take em all the way back out lol..

An easier way is to pop out the housing, (it just snaps in) and replace the bulb, don't even have to get under the vehicle ;)

How do I pop that out? And like at what points? Cause I really don't wanna break that piece

pull up and out on the housing. takes 2 sec.
no need to get under the truck.

Licence plate lamps are not accessible from bumper without disassembly of bumper. Do not pry lenses out either! You can use almost any size of wedge LED bulb as the is lots of room between socket and lense
License plate housings are held by 2 plastic tabs, a compressable top tab and a bottom that hooks over bumper. Getting them out without braking them requires patience. Plastic is getting old and brittle, so be careful dislodging them as fair amout of force is required.
1. warm plastic with hair dyer or do it on a hot day. Not too hot just warm to the touch. There are 2 parts, inside white housing holding bulb and lense and the outside piece your pulling and forcing out. The retaining tabs are located on inside white piece so give the heat time to prenitrait.
2. rock housing using screwdriver on inside edge and pulling towards you, to free up 24 years of crud
3. Once its broke loose, pull housing up vertically to compress to top tab and try pulling bottom out at same time. This may reqiure several try's. If it wont come out reverse and try to push down to free top.
once its out you will see the bottom tab hooks over bumper while the top tab is compressable.
4. Getting it back in is a pain the butt as well.
basicly your pulling up to compress the top tab so bottom tab hooks over bumper with top tab keeping it tight. Soapy water helps with lubrication.
Good luck
