aftermarket/gas gauge
My gas gauge hasn't worked in my 98 4dr since I got it. Changed the while pump assembly and everything and still nothin. Even changed the gauge cluster its self. It reads below empty and the low fuel light stays on. I haven't check the wiring yet though I've been toying with the idea of puttin in an aftermarket gas gauge. How easy or hard would it be to do? Would any aftermarket gas gauge work? And would it work with the stock sending unit?

It would probably be easier to just fix your existing gauge. Check your grounds and power with a multimeter and see what you come up with.

where would the ground be located? and i dont have a multimeter. im not sure if my dad does or not.

now that i think about it, last weekend when i dropped the tank, my dad checked the ground with a test light, and it was fine. so i really have no clue why its not working. i would just like to know how to instal an aftermarket fuel gauge, if it comes down to me having to do that.

It's not a ground problem, it's a problem with the signal wire to the fuel level sender. If the system loses ground, the gauge indicates past full. If the signal wire is shorted to ground the gauge reads below empty.

Your signal wire has been pinched. Putting in a aftermarket fuel gauge means you will have to manually run to appropriate wires to the tank itself.
I believe mine is pinched as well. I have somethings to do to the truck while I wait to replace the pump. First do you have any basic electrical knowledge? Reason I ask is if you do not you should ask someone on here or family how to perform a continuity check. There is a difference between ohm's and continuity. |
