aluminum distributors

Any body know of any problems or issues with aluminum distributors.
I guess there is a common problem with the original plastic distributors breaking. Which is my problem. I have allready replaced on distributor due to cracked houseing and I need another one. The first one was not my fault it came with the truck. I was preetty careful not to over tighten cap but it broke any way. Seems that to get the cap on tight the houseing cracks.

thanks

If you are cracking the distributor, you are either tightening it too much or you got a bad aftermarket part. GM and many other makes have been using plastic distributor housings for quite some time without issues from the design or materials. It just takes some attention to detail when installing components.

The distributor cap screws only require 21 in-lbs (2.4N-m) of torque. You can easily over torque these bolts with a screw driver let alone using a ratchet.

aluminum distributors

The guy who had the truck before me must have cracked the distrbutor. I put in used one from auto recyclers. It cracked too after about 8 months or so.

Somebody on e bay is advertising aluminum distributors as up grade from plastic distributers that are prone to cracking.

So I will probably buy one to put end to problem. Rock auto has them to. Both are around $100.00 range. Cheaper than Delphi etc.

Maybe bad caps cause the distributor to crack I do not know.
