Brake lights wont come on!!!

I just purchased this 95 blazer and need help with getting the brake lights on. The turn signals work and the taillights work its just the actual brake lights that DO NOT come on. We replaced fuses and bulbs and still no luck. Any idea on why they wont come on?? :icon_doh:

Sounds like malfunctioning MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH my blazer had the same issue. Search for it maybe this will help ya.

Try the brake light switch, its a little switch under the dash thats clipped to the brake pedal. They go bad with time, mine was super sensitive so if i moved my foot at all the lights would shut off.

I have had to replace the Brakelight switch twice because only my left brakelight would fail to work, they are total crap pieces but fairly cheap, so I would try that.

The wierd thing is the brakelight would work if I pushed forward on the turn signal stalk, I thought the multifunction switch was bad but turned out to be just a braklight switch.

Good luck

That multi-function switch was recalled by GM. I replaced mine twice and they replaced it again last week for free and gave me my part back. Just wanted to mention that. Anything I can get back I feel like I deserve after this Blazer, lol.

where is the brake light switch located on a 1996 blazer

I have the same issue. My hazard lights and running lights work. Is the switch way up behind the dash board?

For 1 your Multi-Function switch has nothing to do with your brake lights. The switch is located under your dash but east to replace. Get under your dash touch your brake pedal and follow it up feeling around and you will see the switch somewhere around the upper part of your brake pedal.

Actually the multifunctioin switch has to do w/ your brake lights. I was pulled over because I had no brake lights. We checked the everything and soon my blinkers quit working and I got online and found out the switch works multiple things, brake lights included.

And the multi-function switch is the stick that is you use when you turn on your blinkers, bright lights, and cruise control. It also ties into the hazard lights. It is located in the steering column.

BlazerLT you should prof read your stuff before you hit send and no the muti-function switch does not control your brake lights, yes it controls several things but not your brake lights. Pull the switch off and see if you still have brake lights and you will be surprised.

Actually, it is you that should check your facts, R134A. The multifunction switch does indeed affect the brake lights. All but the third brake light that is. You may want to take your own advice.

To the original question. If the third brake light works, but the lower ones do not, it points to a faulty multifunction switch. There is a LOT of information on the forum about this. If you mess with your hazard switch and it allows the brake lights to work, you may be able to get by with just a simple/cheap hazard light replacement.

thank you swartlkk

Easier to remove the bottom trim panel to replace the switch. It's self adjusting. You'll see what I mean.

The multifunction switch is wrapped around your control panel. Is is also called the turn signal switch, and it also controls your hazards. Good luck finding a used one. I replaced mine from Chevy ($420) and STILL have no brake lights.

I was having the same problem after I installed a remote starter on my 98' Blazer. Thought the brake light switch was bad, but did some pokin around and found a wire had wiggled loose from the harness on the swith. White wire on the left (12v when brakes are applied) was loose. I (and the guy that tried to do your remote start) probably loosened it while tapping it for the remote start kill wire. Something to check if your still having a problem.

i came across a recall that was released in 2008 regarding the tail and brake lights not working.. i think it had to do with the hazard light switch but i forget what years are affected. im going to check my vin in the next couple weeks and find out if my 02 is in the recall.
