Budget build!

ok i need some help. im on a super tight budget. lowering kit and parts for more power....suggestions???

Debonair 08-26-2011 05:53 AM

info on truck, engine?

kristoph30 08-26-2011 07:54 AM

I know im going to offend you so consider yourself warned.
If youre on a super tight budget, do nothing.
Put the money in the bank so when something breaks on the blazer you can afford to fix it. Cant tell you how many trucks i see all tricked out with 20's that run like crap.

Like I said, i know its not what you wanted to hear.

All you have to do is read up on here.... use 'new posts'. If you dont have enough set aside in your budget to buy an AC Delco fuel pump, you got no business installing 'Trick'.

Kristoph and I live in Ohio so we will only have half the fuel system problems people in some places will have*. but it's the fact of life. Blazers are high maintenance beauties... that's why you can get them cheap.

Still fun, still cheaper than a car payment and other than rust almost no depreciation to speak of ... but it's no Honda Civic.

Now that all the caveats and warnings are out of the way.. rest of you modder types help the guy out! :)

I do agree i always make sure my trucks running 100 %

Mnstregy54 08-26-2011 02:30 PM

what i meant to say was what are the best cheap parts to buy? thts what i meant by super tight budget

warthogdriver 08-26-2011 03:52 PM

if you want cheap then go autozone lifetime...will be cheap and when they brake you get a new one...if you dont count your labor then that is cheapest.

they have lowering blocks and then you can crank t-bar down...maybe drop an inch.
(i lifted so i might be of no help here) just going on common sense....if you lift more then 1.5" = trouble...so drop more then 1.5" = trouble??

as far as power....you would have to do a 350 swap...why build up an old engine that wasnt built for it in the first place?
get a 350...set it aside and rebuild as your budget allows...then drop her in when you are ready. save a little and spend a little...moderation is key in most things.

do the drop for your visual gratification then power as your budget allows.

thats my plan.

TheRandom1 08-26-2011 05:41 PM

Cheap+modding=broken cheap crap. If you can't afford decent stuff, save until you can. You'll save yourself from having to redo stuff more than once.

AJBert 08-26-2011 10:27 PM

No such thing as a "budget build". Sounds like you've been watching Power Block too much.

Debonair 08-27-2011 06:07 AM

the only way i can see building anything like a budget build, is buy used parts, can be risky, but you might come across parts that werent used, or things that were used for 3,000 miles and then taken out for something bigger.

and junkyard parts

kristoph30 08-27-2011 09:39 AM

Referencing the 350 swap. Can that be EPA compliant? Just wondering. If the truck is driven where E-check is required, would it pass?

TheRandom1 08-27-2011 09:41 AM

Not sure what E-check is, but from what I've found out when I researched it, in any engine swap of a larger motor (4.3 to 5.7 for example) the new motor has to be newer than the old one. So you can't be "legal" if you drop a 5.7 out of your 85 Camaro into your 00 Blazer for example. But if you put a 5.7 out of a 00 truck into your 96 Blazer it'd be legal. That's here in IL, I imagine it's about the same as anywhere else except California.

kristoph30 08-27-2011 10:17 AM

In Ohio, if you have OBD-II they plug in to the data port, visually inspect that the cat is still there and test the gas cap to be sure it holds pressure.

If the SES light fails to light on start up or there is a code. The vehicle fails.

They never raise the hood so they dont know what motor is in it.

pettyfog 08-27-2011 10:30 AM

All Ohio cared about when we still had it was that the car passed emissions for its year and model. And had no Check engine on, IIRC.
And they used mirror to see if there were something looked like Cat's.
And that's the way it should be. None their freaking business

amd oh yeah the gas cap.. forgot. So Kristo. you still got Echeck? I'm in Dayton metro.. Who's getting paid off around where you live? :)

TheRandom1 08-27-2011 10:30 AM

They do the same here in IL but you have to let them know what motor you swapped in, otherwise they're looking for information on a 4.3 which obviously is quite different than a 5.7.

kristoph30 08-27-2011 11:48 AM

Im in Lorain County. Greater cleveland area. Cigarette companies pay for our echeck up here. Its free to the everyday Joe (Who doesnt smoke. Part of a law suit) We are only e-checked every 2 years.

Personally, When i sit behind a car without a catalytic converter in traffic, i tell my kid (18) roll your window down.....thats what it used to smell like ALL the time!

So I do see a difference. I have travelled all over the country. I can SMELL where they no longer enforce emmissions! Oklahoma city is horrible.

TheRandom1 08-27-2011 11:52 AM

I love occasionally rolling behind a classic car with a carb and no cats, but I couldn't handle it every day.

kristoph30 08-27-2011 12:09 PM

Agreed. Once in a while is fine.

I live here (ohio) and never had to pass a e-check. The only check i had to pass was when I was getting my license and they only checked the lights (brake, blinkers, hazards, low and high beams) to make sure they worked. Hmm remind me to never move to the greater cleveland area ha ha ha. Yeah when im rolling behind those classics i got my window down with a smile. I need a time machine so i can go get me one for $1000-$5000 instead of finding shells for 3000 :(

kristoph30 08-27-2011 01:08 PM

Once every 2 year checks really arent that big of a deal. All they are doing is enforcing a federal law.

LOL. I stopped watching Power Block years ago but I always thought it was funny during their budget builds when they used $12,000 crate motors that they had laying around. Cuz we all have those, right?

i love that show, that is the reason i wanted to work on motors and such.. until I realized they spent roughly 30grand to build their vehicles.. and I only had maybe 300-500 to work with. But that show did give me some good ideas and taught me a few things.

Who doesn't have a half of dozen brand new crate motors just laying around? ha ha ha ha ha "You pick up this item at your local summit store for just $499" Favorite line of those shows was at the end when they would tell you where to get the parts and the cost of the part like it was just pocket change.
