Clunk and sudden lose of motion, 2001 Blazer

Had to have our present 2001 4x4 Blazer towed home today. We were leaving a stop light headed for a interstate on ramp when probly about the time it hit 2nd gear or after we had a sudden clunk and suddenly lost forward motion. Was also accompanied by a whining noise after the clunk. Noise didn't seem to be a grinding noise.

I did try it in low 1 and it was trying to move but with it whinging we shut it down and called for a tow. From what I have been reading I am afraid the the Sunshell may have broken. Only about 117k on her so I didn't really expect any major transmission problem.

I did start it briefly once more when home and the whine sounds like it is in the transmission for sure maybe in the rear part. Not going to run it any more till I find out more.

Was it whining while in park?

Yes it was when we got it home. Didn't think so at first but there was a lot of noise from all the traffic and such where we were broke down.

I briefly tried reverse and all I got was a grinding noise instead of just the whine. Looks like it must be the sun shell.
