Control arm bushing installation
Has anybody replaced the control arm bushings on a 2nd generation jimmy or blazer? I tired to do it yesterday and ended up bending the arm where the bushings go in and had to buy a whole new arm. It was only 20 dollars for the bushings, but the arm was 250. I do need to replace the bushings on the other 3 arms as well but decided against it due to damaging an arm. I tried the special gm tool for it but I guess someone put the wrong parts back in the kit and the right ones were lost.

honestly i just burn them out and chisel away with large flathead screwdriver to get the rubber out...then collapse the shell and taaa daa.
is it the best way? prob not
take along time...i can do 3 sides in a day....mehhh

Heh.. it's been so long ago it's like another planet. But that's how we got the old ones out. Still works good, burnt out some different bushings recently to salvage the OEM inner sleeves.
Remove Old Bushing:
Burn rubber out of old bush
lay CA on back, u channel up
pound bushing shell inward along length of shell with old dull chisel till shell diameter is pulled in and falls loose.
When I put the new ones in, I cut galv pipe to length of the inside of the 'U' and split it so it would keep side of U from collapsing.
Also used something like this, cut to fit snug in control arm U channel
And come to think of, though I dont remember doing it then.. just cut the old outer shell of the bush in half, lengthways, and spread it a little then cut to fit-snug length
To install once the spacer is in there, done everything from pound them in to using a cobbled batch of big-*** sockets with special config hook-type spring compressor to draw them in. Prefer the latter.

I'm thinking about changing my bushings too. The uppers seem easy enough to do- but I think you have to releave the torsion bars to do the lowers.

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the upper control arm. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement .
2. Install the upper control arm in a vise.
2. Install the upper control arm in a vise.
3. Remove the upper control arm bushings using J 21474-01 .
