forgot to release hand brake then loud noise from drum brake but still running well-why?

Sounds like you might have broken the emergency brake band inside the rear rotors.

my cable got locked up one day, when i got back to the shop i could hear a grinding noise. turned out there was no pad left on the brake pads just metal. had to manually release the parking brake from the back too.
