Dropping the Fuel Tank

Does anybody have some advice on dropping the fuel tank to get to the fuel tank vent valve. I was told that the tank has to be dropped in order to replace it. I do not have access to a lift and am wondering if this should be left to be done by a shop. Thanks.

It isn't too difficult to do in your garage if you have good jack stands. You should only have to drop the front of the tank and only enough to get to the vent valve.

If you take the tank clear out it is best if your tank is almost empty. I use a piece of plywood between the tank and a floor jack. The plywood is sized to fit between the tank straps.

Weather you take the tank out or just drop one end try not to break any hoses or fittings. It belive I had to unhook 6-7 hoses and 2 wire connectors the 3 times I have had mine out.

Had mine out twice thanks to the guy at the parts store giving me the wrong fuel pump. I thought the hoses were easier to get at when I took off the L/H wheel and supported the truck on a jack stand under the frame. The wire connector on mine came off of the tank in the rear between the tank and the frame. Mine is a 94 4 door with Vortec. Wrench size on mine is 16mm on both pressure and return lines even though the lines are two different sizes. Rhe line to the vapor cannister is a clamped on line. You really need to get as much fuel out as you can first. Gets interesting if you don't.
