Engine Knock on startup- Scary

Arent the lifters in a 4.3 hydraulic???

Yes, they are. They can get worn, or get sludge stuck in them; keeps them from "pumping up" resulting in the ticking sounds. The rocker arms can get loose, results in chatter too.
If the push rod(s) get clogged with sludge then not enough oil or no oil gets to the rocker arm and wear point on top of the valve stems. Wears out, results in chatter too.

I guess I should have been a little more clear. I know they are hydraulic, My remark was directed at the advice of adjusting the tappets. I have never known a hydraulic valve train to go out of adjustments unless there was a mechanical failure of some sort. I am not 100% if I am hearing lower end know or upper end tock in the video. If the noise is a tock from the valve train and goes away after 6 seconds or so like the poster states, then it isnt an adjustment issue.
If someone was really good, they could determine weather the noise was valve train or lower end by the speed of the noise. Lower end noise is twice the speed of valve train noise. I believe its lower end judging from the spped of the noise.
Sorry my post doesnt flow well and read smoothly. Sick as a dog and the cold meds are making me foggy.

Under many or any of the conditions I stated, it can take 6 seconds for the lifters to pump up enough volume and/or pressure and then the ticking noise goes away.
The oil pressure might take a bit to build up simply from worn clearances all over the engine from the oil pump on upward.

I had the same problem with a 94' S-10 w/2.2, 2000 S-10 w/2.2, 95' G-30 w/4.3 and 2000 trailblazer w/4.3. Usually was more noticeable on cold days. All from not running 5-30 like the factory says. You can get away with it on old V-8's but the newer engines seem to develop a temporary lifter tap.

I understand the concept of lifter having to pump up on start-up. I still stand behind my statemnent of the valve train not needing to be adjusted if it is pumping up and quietling down.
But I really dont think he has lifter noise. Could be wrong. Just my opinion.

I dout i have lifter tap als. My sonoma had lifter tap but no engine knock. I can tell the difference being lifter tap is at the top. And kinda sounds like a sewing machine.

Did running 5w-30 help at all on the start up? Im running 10w-40 and mine taps when i start the truck also, Was possibly thinking of dropping to 5w-30 also

MY KNOCK HAS KINDA GONE AWAY, NOW I HAVE LIFTER TAP, THIS FING SUCKS. hessetation is still there. im gunna get new wires, cap, and rotor when i get some funds. then maybe opt for a new fuel pump, wanting to check the fpr but scared about messing up the plenum gasket as i am hella broke, and not much work latley....

If your fuel pressure is low, New plugs wires and stuff wont help.
I believe you already determined you dont have enough fuel pressure.
