Engine overheated... DEAD???
 

Well, I did it this time...

Replaced my radiator and thermostat, flushed the system, and refilled... Ran fine, until...

I was driving on the freeway, and the engine lost power. Pulled over, shut it off (or it stalled, don't remember), opened the hood, and it was smoking!!! Opened the radiator cap, checked the overflow reservoir, and they were both dry! Now the engine won't even turn over.

?'s: What damage did I do? How much is my wallet going to feel the pain? Can I do the work myself?

(Just throwing the line out right now... will provide more info as I get it.)

Did you make sure to get all of the air out of the system first???

As far as how much damage is done... Well, if it will not turn over, you likely broke something in the block. At the least it sounds like you have blown a head gasket. You can hope that you filled a cylinder with coolant and that it is hydro-locked which is what is causing the engine to not turn over.

You really will not know how bad it is until you get into it.

If I were you, I would be looking for a replacement engine.

First the good news:

Now the bad news: Shop checked it out, and she's dead. Coolant leaked into the intake, into the oil, and hydrolocked. Also got into the air intake, the air filter is damp, and ruined the MAF sensor. He says possibly the PCV system, but it doesn't matter... she's dead.

And they want $3700 to install a reman engine. (Along with an MAF sensor and air intake sensor, but...)

?'s:
1) Is that price about right to install a reman engine?
2) Would it be worth it to acquire an engine from a salvage yard, and have that put in?
3) Any other things I need to be concerned about when doing this job? (It's not something I can do myself, nor would I want to...)

it costs 1700 bucks for a reman 4.3L Long Block which includes all the gaskets and a New oil pump at Advance auto..Engine is Built at Marshall Engines..3 year unlimited mile warranty but for warranty you have to get a New Timing chain cover and New Oil Lines...plan on a new water pump too.

To me 3700 bucks sounds a bit steep,If i were you i would shop around and get other quotes from different garages if you cant do this yourself.
