Fuel Guage stopped working!?

1996 Blazer
125,000 miles
The fuel guage stopped working about 2 months ago. Now we just fill it up based on how many miles we have driven. What would be the cause of this and is it something that I can fix?
Thanks!

I have the same problem, when i crank it up, it will be like 1/4 to half full, then gradually it will go to full. Any help would be awesome.

RE: Fuel Guage stopped working!?

It is a common problem. Mine does the same thing. Mine will show fuel down to 3/4 tank. Hold there until empty. Then I run out of gas real quick, within 20 miles. Don't ask how I know.
The problem lies in the fuel guage sending unit. Which is located in the gas tank. The only way to fix it is to replace it. I am not sure of the year, however I know that in my 2000 Blazer the fuel pump and fuel sending unit are sold as one unit. You cannot buy them seperately. How do I know this, cuase my gas tank is sitting on the ground under my truck until tomorrow when I can get a new unit. :) Heres the kicker. Depending on where you go, and which version of the unit you need, the price ranges from $260-$450. Shop around and get a lifetime warrenty. There are two version available for the 4drs. The only way to identify which version you need is by the tag on top of the fuel pump/sending unit. Which happens to be on top of your gas tank. So the only way to get that info is to drop your gas tank. Then call for parts and hope the cheapest place in town with a lifetime warrenty has one in stock. Otherwise you wait until tehy can get it in or pay more.

Dropping the tank itself isn't hard or time consuming provided it has 5 gallons of gas or less in it.
Mine has 2 bolts hodling it in place. 15mm deepwell socket. 6 hoses and 2 wiring harnesses. I have found the easiest way to remove the rubber hose is by spraying it with PB-Blaster. It will soften the rubber so you can pull it off the fitting it is stuck to.

By the way most places (Autozone, O'Rielly's, Advanced Auto, Napa) are in the $260-$330 neighborhood. Dealer was in the $400-$450 neighborhood.

I have the same problem and have encountered the same issues for this part. I checked dealerships, advance auto, auto zone and nappa for the parts and unless you are willing to pay in the neighborhood of $400 - $600 you can't even get it due to back order of the lower priced pumps. I found a brand new ac delco pump with gm 1 yr warranty on ebay for $130. The same part that I found for over $300 at the parts stores. They have them for the 2dr and 4dr versions. Grab it while you can!!!! Complete fuel pump assembly, nothing else to buy. Hope this helps. I've done a lot of business with EBAY with no problems. Shipping was $9.00 and the guy is a fast shipper.:D

I too have the same problem and use the trip odometer two let me know when to fill. Well my question is does this mean i am going to need a new fuel pump?

This problem must be common for all Blazers. I own a '99 LS and the other half owns a '00 LT. The fuel gauges start fluctuating after indicating 3/4 of a tank and then show full. Like everyone else here, we use the trip meters to refill the tanks, and don't bother with the gauge. Oh yeah, don't depend on the "low fuel' light to come on. I've only seen it come on once and have put 16-17 gallons in the 18 gallon tank with no light. The only time I see the light is during start up.

Mine had this issue when I bought it...sending unit was replaced but it didn't fix the problem...turned out to be a chafed wire under the dash
