Fuel pump questions..

So with all this talk of fuel sending unit/fuel pump issues..I did a search on line..and on here and couldn't get my questions answered...I have a couple questions....(maybe more) first off..are there any tell tale signs or "symptoms" that would lead you to believe that your fuel pump is failing? aside from an already failed fuel sending unit...ok maybe it's only a one part question....

RE: Fuel pump questions..

Failing sending unit does not mean the pump will fail except if you run it dry to many times....the fuel pump needs at least 1/4 tank to be completely covered in cold fuel to keep its internal temps inline. My guage has been yo-yoing for the last 1.5yrs and the pump is still working fine... I hear high-pitched whine after turning the key on, it will stop when the pressure in the system is correct, when the truck is running you should hear this whine...

Indications that the pump may possibly be failing is hard starting after sitting. The F/I system on the second gen 4.3 requires 60psi to start and 50-55+ while it is running...there is a connector at the back of the engine near the brake vacuum booster, so you can attach a fuel pressure guage to check these measurements.

RE: Fuel pump questions..

Agreed. My fuel pump failed a few years after my sending unit did. Unfortunately, the pressure regulator was put off too long and caused my pump to fail. It can be a costly procedure because of how much the pump is worth ... but Ebay it ... and it's not so bad. I checked with my local dealer for a pump and it was well over $400 ... but on Ebay I found one for $115.
