fuel smell
2001 blazer 4x4 after i fill up there is a strong smell of fuel while driving the first minute or 2 then it goes away. I've never notice this with any other car or truck i've owned any ideas? thanks

If the fuel pump has ever been changed its very common for the front vent valve on the gas tank to break. This will cause gas smell on fill up and an evap code. You ever get one of those?
yeah i've gotten the evap code intermittently fuel pump was done right before i got the truck do i have to drop the tank for that?
If you fill up up tothe top and smell gas i would suspect the top of your tank is rusted where the sending unit goes in.Its a common 90`s something GM problem.
Sorry Man, just looked at your tank and its changed since mine. The vents I spoke of are not on it.
If it's a 4 door, it does have the vent fitting on the front of the tank, (2 door doesn't have one).
Another possibility is a rusted out filler neck, or as mentioned, a rust hole in the top of the fuel tank. Could be from overfilling too. If you overfill it, the purge canister will get saturated with raw fuel. It's not designed to handle raw fuel, vapor only. If that's the case, it needs to be replaced. When re-fueling: when the pump shuts off, the tank is full, don't keep clicking it, canisters are not cheap ;) |
Yea Capt, when I looked it seemed odd I was only getting the short two door tanks.
Gold, you can do it without dropping the tank, it's sloppy but not a problem. Pull a picture of the tank and you will see were the front vent is. Feel up over the frame, find it and glop some RTV in there. Then you will have to feel were the steel line that runs along the frame is and block that. If your lucky there will be a short piece of rubber hose you can bend over and crimp with a hose clamp. |
heyi appreciate you guys looking into this for me its a 2 door so i'll check for a picture and see whats up there
2 door tanks only have one vent, and it's part of the fuel pump module.
Do you get the smell any time you add fuel or just when you fill up all the way?
