Simple rundown

86-87 have a bastard computer nobody has fully hacked

88-93(4) do take a chip

95(4)-96 is obd1.5 and its rare to find somebody with the correct stuff to flash the ecm

96-04 have to have the ecm reflashed

86-94ish are obd1 do have removeable chips

Obd1.5 and obd2 do not have removeable chips. The ecm has to be removed and the tune loaded directly to it.

Now for mass produced "chips and tunes". They are worthless. An expert can build 2 exact same engines the same day and they will run different. You have to have the tune for the exact engine its gonna run. This include the mods done to that engine. Any extra mods added later and the tune has to be adjusted. Good tuners can get close but it will never be exact without putting it on an dyno before and after the tune. Adjustments made in the process.

The mass produced chips sold for obd1 do nothing but advance the timing. This is why they suggest a colder t-stat ran with them cause it makes the engine run hotter.

The chips for obd2 are nothing more than a 5cent resistor that plugs into the iat and tells ecm the incoming air is cooler. The ecm then dumps extra fuel into the engine. This is wasteful and the o2 fights to correct it.

The simple answer is no its not worth it.

Now learn and digest what neo said and think 'CAI', especially one that doesnt have a heat shield.

You are removing the factory filter box which really IS a CAI, and replacing it with a lower restriction filter which gets a lot of its air from behind the radiator fan. since the PCM knows how much air its getting and what temp {mass/volume} it is, all your performance and economy gains are in your head.
A CAI can ONLY make a difference at Wide Open Throttle. And ONLY if it really is getting Cold Air.

But of course it's way purtier so it must be better!
We used to call that **** 'go-faster' junk.
The FUNNIEST part is the guy who then thinks "Wow.. that metal tube gets hot.". and starts figuring out what to wrap around all that shiny stuff to insulate it!
