Default Fuel pressure Test

George,

when I do the test at the filter I have to cycle the switch 2 to 3 times to get the pressure past 50psi. With the key off the pressure still is climbing to nearly 60. So my question is did I screw something up doing this test, and it’s now throwing the results off?

something is definitely wrong between the tank and your test point at the filter. That key on pressure should be much higher closer to 90 or more. Did you say that’s a brand new Delphi or AC Delco fuel pump?

Yes it is a new Delphi fuel pump, with check valve. I thought something wasn’t right as I was looking for initial switch that it shoot to 90. I am wondering if the relay which isn’t new is getting hot and not allowing the pump to run long enough.

there are a few possibilities, but this needs to be resolved. First, the pump can be faulty, although I doubt that because that brand has a good reputation so let’s not go there for now. Second your fuel filter is clogged, so take it off and check the dead head pressure from the line without the filter. Third there’s an obstruction somewhere in the line from the pump to the filter. Fourth, you have a voltage problem at the pump. Let’s start with the dead head pressure with the filter removed and go from there.

Okay I will check without the filter, but the filter shouldn’t be clogged I replaced it with a WIX filter when I done the pump.

Something did not go right so we need to diagnose from square one. If this is not the problem then we move on to voltage and ground at the pump. I am trying to save dropping the tank again for last because that job is a PITA.
