What is a drive gear? In the transmission?

 

There is a gear on the distributor drive shaft that meshes with the gear on the camshaft:



If the distributor housing is not aligned correctly in the intake manifold, the gear wears and the shaft will not rotate smoothly and true.

 

I know this thread is old but Im having these same issues. Did anyone ever find a solution?
