Be careful on those oiled filters guys. If you drive in any dusty environments the K/N allows alot of dust through and this will slowly kill your engine. The oil will also clog up your MAF which will hurt your mpgs. I'd highly recommend you stick with a dry paper filter or Amsoil's new filter.
If you want better mileage, drive like a granny. On top of a new dry air filter and Delco plugs, clean you MAF sensor and put in a new fuel filter. And maybe clean your throttle body? |

I wouldn't run a K&N filter if it was given to me & installed. There are much better non replaceable filters out there. I ran one I can't think of the brand in our 04 Trailblazer 4x4 that was much better. It is the one with 5 layers you can get them from NAPA. Crap this is going to drive me crazy trying to think of the band. |
I'm hoping for at least 15mpg in my jimmy when I get it on the road. Right now my FSC is only getting 13mpg. My gf is driving my gas saver (94 grand am quad 4) right now and that gets over 30mpg. I only have a 2 mile drive to work so I don't really need good mileage. It's just easier on the wallet.

I have been getting 24+ mpg from my 1997 4dr 4x4 with the following changes and maintinence since I bought it:
1. Plugs - AC Delco rapidfire, also fresh cap and rotor 2. Running Synthetic oil in everything - Royal Purple in trans, diffs, transfer case and Mobil 1 0w30 in engine with AC Delco oil filter 3. Cold air intake - with K&N style cone filter but with sock prefilter to keep out fine dust 4. Tires - Michelin MXV4 energy tires 235/65/17, tires are inflated to max rating on sidewall of 51psi, it rides a bit hard but this really helped with mpg 5. Alignment - front toe set to 0, front camber set to 0, caster set to 3 deg. 6. Removed roof rack and lowered front end 1" with torsion bars. These are the easy things to fix on your car to help with mpg - you don't really need to replace oxygen sensors as long as they are functioning, the mpg gain from an aged sensor won't get you a payback for a long time. Ok, so KN is bad idea cause of the oil and all, so what are some good choices, for non oiled stock filters, thanks.

Stick with AC delco. At least stay away from Fram, they have the lower filter area of any brand.
