How do I check the fault codes on a 97 Blazer

Some DTCs can be had by jumping proper pins on the ALDL interface under the dash (I got a pic in another thread of that jump). Others you'll have to go to Advance / Zone, and get a scan done. And some will not read even with their scanners.
After you get them, head for a local mechanic, and see if they'll printout for you the FACTORY diagnostic procedure. Might have to pay them a few bucks...

Anything 96 and later will be fully OBD2 compliant which means that a scan tool is required to read the codes. There is no paper clip trick that can be done to these trucks to read the PCM codes, but that trick does work for 4wd system codes on the OP's truck if so equiped.
Once you get the codes, post back up and we'll get you covered. There are many code sheets already posted in the Tech Article (DIY) section.
