How do I get engine codes?

Sorry if this addressed elsewhere. I tried to get an answer by searching.
I am a new 1998 blazer owner. It just started running rough and the check engine light flashes non-stop. How do I go about checking codes so I can troubleshoot? Looking for cheapest way to check codes myself
Thanks

If the Check Engine light is flashing while you're driving then you're getting a serious code and you need to get it checked very soon. Since yours is a 1996 you should be able to take it to any decent auto parts store and have them pull the codes for you with a scanner. On the 1994 and earlier (and some 1995s) you could get the codes by shorting two pins on the ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link) connector under the dash. 1996 and newer are OBD II-compliant vehicles which require a scanner to access the codes.

In addition to taking your truck to an auto parts store for a code scan you should also consider buying a scanner. I have one and I use it quite a bit. If you get a more capable scan tool you can access engine data from the sensors while it's running which is often quite helpful for diagnostic purposes.
