Red face How much gas...

is left when low fuel light comes on.
My handbook doesn t say whats left in the tank when the light comes on, yes i know its not good for the fuel pump to let it get so low, but it happens.

I think my 2000 4X4 Blazer LT has an 18 gallon tank and when I have let it hit the "Low Fuel" light, it took about 16 gallons to fill up. My guess is you have about 2 gallons left when the light comes on.

*EDIT* The above post was posted while I was replying. Maybe I'm wrong about the size of my tank, but I've never been able to get more than 16.5 gallons in after the light comes on.

A much better way is to determine the amount of MILAGE left in the tank. Try to time the low gas light to a road sign that reads 'next gas 147mi'. ; )

Ok, so i guess with answers that vary so much its a crap shoot and maybe no 2 vehicles are the same.
I m sure my gas gauge works correctly so i d best just work it out myself.
Thanks for the imput guys!

all depends on the vehicle. some have a few gallons left when it says totally empty. the float doesnt always sit flush on the bottom of the tank. when we had a bad gas spell going on in the area, we would drain all the tanks then put 2 gallons in it, the small toyotas would register like a 8th of a tank, bigger vans and trucks would still say dead empty

You hit it correct they vary. My 97 Blazer I ran it down to about 2 gallons left "no low fuel light"
My 98 comes on with about 8 gallons left.
One thing these Blazer have in common is non of the gauges read the same or very accurate.

It depends how accurately the float arm is calibrated to the actual fuel level in the tank. If you want it to be more accurate, drain the tank using the fuel pump. Then remove the fuel pump module and bend the float arm until the dash gauge reads empty when the module is installed.

I cannot understand why such a simple, yet important device could be so badly designed by GM, an accurate gas gauge, wow such technology.
I once drove a 99 mitsubishi galant, the gas gauge was accurate to within 5 miles.
Lets all keep flying the flag.
