ignition switch problem
 

the ignition switch on my steering column is going bad. has anyone ever replaced theirs?

Not a bad job, two key areas.
My way.
Remove the rubber pad your keys bang against.
Split the top plastic cover under the switch, the rubber pad will hide it on reassembly. Now you can work the covers out of the way.
Buy a #4 female torx socket.

Other methods will come to you also, they all work, you don't want to pull the steering wheel unless you know what your doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks man! ive pulled wheels before but its not something i like to do. appreciate the help!

ok time to bring this back from the dead. i took everything off and didnt see any pulled or messed up wires. but still it doesnt want to kick on right away. sometimes it only takes a second sometimes it takes forever and i have to play with the tilt. could this be the actual switch?

Did you replace the module?
The black plastic unit with all the wires?

If you are refering to the key switch as possibly being bad, no it has nothing to do with the module function other than turn the module, a crew drive works fine.

If you replaced the module and still have the same problem what exactly are the symptoms?

i did not replace the module because i thought a wire had been tugged or shorted because my body had been jacked up to fix one of my body mounts. the symptoms are that,
as previously stated
when i turn the key on the gauges do not come on, none of the dummy lights come on and the fuel pump doesnt prime itself. sometimes it will kick on by itself after a minute, sometimes i have to move the wheel up and down(tilt) for it to kick on

I really believe you need to replace the module.
Sometimes the truck will just stop on the road and restart later, very common problem.
They run about 30 bucks, shop around

ok sorry again but do i need the ignition lock cylinder? or the ignition starter switch?

The ignition switch..no it's not a module...just an electric switch....you don't need a cylinder, unless you are having problems physically turning the key.
