Default Info on OBD2 scanners and 95's

Hey, today we picked up an obd2 scan tool. It's a descent one. Well it was a relief to find that my 95 is running good. I did a full scan. No problems. And if you've seen my gallery at to what I had to do when I bought my truck it's good to know it's back together. Anyway.

I verified that I DO have an OBD2 95 Jimmy. Not only did the scanner connect with my computer, but the manual also gave some info. In the engine compartment, located on the top of the radiator shroud is that sticker with the emissions information. There should be a spot on there that says OBD2 compliant. I know this is an issue with those of us that have 95's. I had a 95 grand am that had one of those screwy quasi obd1.5 setups. But my 95 Jimmy is definitely an obd2 truck. I wish I could show you the sticker with the OBD2 Compliant tag from my truck. But when the front was smashed one of the things that was destroyed and I had to replace was the radiator shroud. And the only one I could find was from a 95 that wasn't obd2. So I don't have it on my sticker. But having the OBD2 connector isn't for sure, because the computer could be in the dash, hence the obd1.5 model. So to be sure look on the emissions sticker on the upper radiator shroud and look in the upper right corner of the sticker, it should say OBD2 compliant. Then you know you're good.

Just to expand on this topic, here are the configurations available in 95:
  • Fully OBD1 - OBD1 connector under the dash on the driver side with the ECU under the dash on the passenger side. Early 95 models could have this configuration.
  • Mongrel OBD1/OBD2 - OBD2 connector under the dash on the driver side with the ECU located under the dash on the passenger side. This is the most prevalent arrangement for the 95 model year. It is uncertain when the change over happened from fully OBD1 to this twisted mess. This is the one where most (if not all) economical scan tools available cannot read stored codes. It depends on your definition of "economical".
  • Fully OBD2 - OBD2 connector under the dash on the driver side with the PCM located under the hood on the passenger side. Only late model year 95's got this configuration, but again, I have not been able to find any change over information.

Well why don't we try to nail this down. Maybe we can get all us with 95's on here to verify when their trucks were made. I just looked on the sticker on the inside of my driver door. The manufacture date shows 06/95.

If I'm not mistaken the dealerships would start listing one year's model at the end of the previous year. So a blazer/jimmy listed as a 95 would conceivably have been actually built in the end of '94? So those with a 95. check the stickers on the inside of your door and your configuration. Lets try to nail this down. What dates/time had the obd1, the hacked obd1.5 and when did they start with the OBD2 setup. We've got June 1995 with mine. There's a start.

Not sure if my 95 Bonneville qualifies, but mine was built October 1994, and it is OBD 1.5.

My Jimmy was built in April '95 and appears to be ODBII compliant as well, per swartlkk's description. Interestingly, the emissions sticker on the upper radiator shroud actually states that it is fully OBD1 compliant along the bottom center of the sticker, and says nothing about OBD2. I plugged an OBD2 scanner into it yesterday and it reads just fine.
