To be clear this alignment happens once per crank revolution correct?

Alignment with TDC #1 happens every two revolutions of the crankshaft, but the same marks appear in the same place each revolution. That is why you need to figure out which is TDC#1 and which alignment is TDC #4 by the puff of air during compression stroke right before marks align.

Default still not in time

so i haf my father come help me get the engine to what I believe is the compression stroke. then reset the distributor to line up with the 6put it all back together and you can still hear the engine fighting against the starter im frustrated with this truck gonna step back from it for a bit

question if everything is lined up is it possible that ive mistaken the exhaust stroke for the compression stroke i had a good forceful pressure from the cylinder and i dont see any other way that could happen

It's possible. You can double check it without removing the distributor again. Just disconnect the coil and take off the cap. Repeat the engine rotation deal and see where the rotor lines up.

i thought i had it cause it was cranking over without the sound of compression fighting against the starter and it smelled of fuel so i was thinking maybe id fuel fouled the plugs but then I got another backfire through the exhaust

took the cap back off after resetting no 1 to tdc and its 180 out so ill pull th distributor again and reset it

guys I pulled the distributor and reset it and still no run if i had hair before it would be pulled out for sure
