Looking at a used engine
What are the differences between a '97 and '98 4.3L in a 2WD Blazer? I'm looking at POSSIBLY replacing the one which came with the truck with a used one. I currently have about 171K on the engine and I just keep dumping money into engine parts and I thought it might be of benefit to consider buying a used, low mile replacement.
I found one from a '97 2WD Blazer with about 107k on the odometer. They are asking 750.00 for it. Now, I know I can get one a little cheaper online but after shipping, I'm up to about 700.00 or more. Thoughts? Suggestions? What should I be looking for? I'm going ask to see them running before I purchase any engine from anyone. Thanks. |
HMMMM Too many variables! Have you heard this engine run? Have you inspected to make sure an intake gasket job has been done? You will run into a few electrical issues, changes did occur from 97 to 98! $750 is about the going price for a good 4.3 used of these years! A properly maintained 4.3 will go 300K after LIM issues are dealt with. But while the engine is out one can tackle many other issues as well( Trans lines, suspension and radiator problems) So don't count it out! It may be most cost effective to go this route! Think of the long run.A $1500 vehicle that will last another 10 years. Thats what I am happily dealing with now!

I read somewheres there is a difference on some years with the crank sensor lobe inside the engine. Pop off the crank sensor and rotate the engine, looking in the sensor hole to make sure it has the same lobe inside...that the crank sensor reads. So your computer will get the correct signal.
I can't remember which years were different. |
