Name that noise!

Hey guys,

So ive been having this issue for a while now but cant seem to nail it down. The sound only happens when it starts up for about 30 seconds, then does it sometimes for 2-3 seconds while driving. I was told it was the fan clutch first, but after replacing it, the sound continues. It sounds more like an air or vacuum pump. Anyone have any definitive diagnosis here? Thanks guys!!

Sounds like power steering pump to me too, but its odd that it stops making the noise. Usually when they make noise, it does not go away, how does the fluid look? and how does it turn, is it tough to turn, or still nice and smooth and easy, if its nice and smooth, and easy, deal with the noise.. The power steering pump has a constant whine in my jimmy, and has since I got it, and i can still turn it with my pinky.

heck,i fixed it with some of that lucas power steering fix. try it. lol

i was thinking that it might have been low on fluid....but then the noise wouldnt stop...so yeah.

Remove the serpentine belt and try it. If the noise is gone, probably the power steering pump, (or secondary air pump). However, it seems to stop very abruptly, like something electrical turning off, which makes me think possibly the ABS pump or the secondary air pump. Remove the fuses and try it.... just a thought. Videos are great but it's not like actually being there ;)

Ok i'm gonna try the serp belt trick. Thanks for the heads up captain. Also, for the secondary air pump, is that the actual name for the pump itself? I am trying to get this thing ironed out before snow falls. So i'm starting to side with you guys that think its electrical in nature due to the time-frame that it lasts for.

While the belt is off, check all the other accessories to see if one has a bad bearing. I put $.01 on the belt tensioner. :)
