Hey guys, just wondering if i can use the vent hose to fill up the rear diff. Ive searched and search but cant find the answer.

The vent tube on my '96 is on the diff housing so I'm guessing yours is to. You could do it but it would be slooooow going plus how would you know if you've added either too much or not enough without the removing the filler plug? Have'nt tried to remove the plug?

 

The middle of the plug is a circle... so i'm trying to think of a way to get its out (i dont have a welder)

My idea is to dremel the fill plug back to a square and grind down a 1/2in extension.

Im just asking about filling through the vent so i can bring it to a buddies weld an extension onto it in case i cant get the fill plug out with the dremel

Do you know if it's empty or low? Definitely don't want to overfill it.

 

chisel the hole clean to full depth
try again with 3/8th drive making sure it stays engaged
OR
a piece of 1/2 inch solid steel stock and grid down stock until you can pound into damaged hole use pipe wrench or vise grips on stock

sometimes there is enough of the plug sticking out that you can get on it with a really good set of curved jaw visegrips

 

Nice info rexazz2, I didn't know they made hex head screw extractors like that

 

ive removed a few at work by sticking a bolt in the hole that barely fits then welding it in there. usually comes right out with it being heated up. im sure you can bring it to any shop and have them remove it.

also i owned a s10 years ago where i did just fill it up through the vent tube. i just drained it and put in what the capasity was at.

also they sell rear diff cover rubber plugs. a lot of chryslers come with them from the factory, you can just drill a hole in your diff cover and go that way.
