Oil Pressure gauge pegged to max

On the way to work this morn. the CEL came on, then at noon I went to look again & noticed the oil pressure gauge pegged to max. It won't move even with the key off. Odd/different smell under the hood, not alrming but different. Truck runs fine.... I hope lol

I would start by disconnecting the electrical connection to the oil pressure sending unit located at the back of the engine between the distributor and the driver side valve cover. Observe the gauge when you do this. If it returns to is zero position with the key on, engine off, then the sending unit is bad. If not, then it is either a wiring problem or an actual gauge problem.

The fact that it does not return when the key is off would lead me to believe that it is the gauge cluster.

Well it started jumping around erratically a few times, heard it 'click' to max pressure (off the scale completely) I disconnected the leads to it, it dropped to 0. So off to the shop it goes. $131 later they replaced the oil pressure sending unit. The old one was almost in 2 pieces when he took it out. Now it reads 275 KPa when traveling & just under that when warm & at idle. Not what the readings were before & what I'm used to seeing but then again that was from a 'on it's way out unit'.

thnx again Kyle
PS when can I see my truck on the front page? :-P

Thanks for the follow up!

Glad you got it fixed!

Wow, another Oil Pressure Sending Unit gone kaplooey! Just how common is this & what could be underlying issues that could cause 2 to go in as many months?
