p0440 to p0442

Ive been have problems with my SES light going on and off for a while but it has a pretty predictable cycle now. I was getting a p0440 and ive tightend the gas cap and all and cleared the code and its came back on in 3 run cycles. Ive completely went through the whole fuel system and saw to cracks or malfunctioning parts. Now recently, I get p0442 instead of the p0440. I replaced my gas cap a few months because the old one sat around a while while I was changing the fuel pump. I did not replace it with an OEM cap though. Should I put out the money and get the OEM cap or just turn and get a smoke test done? Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

I've seen more than one gas cap that is aftermarket have the wrong gasket (o-ring) in the inside. Check that first.

Still havent gone out and bought an OEM cap....but I did discover if i keep it above half tank the light stays off..weird

Heres the real question..

When we changed out the fuel pump with a new AcDelco Unit, The new pump came with a new o-ring that also acted like a sleeve that slid in the hole were the fuel pump goes in the gastank. My dad didnt think the pump would fit in the hole with the new o-ring so we used the old one (which was still in good condition.) what are your thoughts on that? Worth dropping the tank and trying the new seal or spending $92 on a smoke test?

I found a guy locally that did a gas tank smoke test for me for $48! Seems like a really good guy. Turns out one of my evap lines coming off of the fuel pump is cracked. Im having him fix it. He's dropping the tank, repairing the line, re-pressurizing and re-smoking for $250 or under.
