I just finished removing the starter on my 2000 blazer 4 door 4x4. It was original and has lasted over 200,000km.

I found the process relatively straightforward after reading this topic. It took about an hour moving slowly. Thanks everyone for the help.

The problem I had was that the starter failed to make any noise on ignition.

Diagnosing the problem
  1. The first step was to verify the starter was the problem. I jacked up the passenger side of the truck, removed the wheel, and pulled up the inside wheel liner to get easy access to the starter solenoid.
  2. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the smallest wire on the back of the solenoid. Have an assistant try to start the truck and verify that the ignition resulted in power to the solenoid. This worked which meant the ignition switch, transmission switch, and relay were all functional.
  3. I verified that the starter had power by testing the largest lead on the solenoid with a voltmeter. It read 12.5V. All good
  4. Using a pair of pliers with a plastic handle I rested the plier end on the big
    lead on the solenoid and opened the pliers to connect the two terminals together. There was a spark (which I wasn't expecting) but the starter didn't move or make any noise
  5. I then concluded the starter was dead


Removing the starter
  1. Disconnected the battery (obviously critical when dealing with starter wires)
  2. I sprayed all 3 bolts on the solenoid and the two bolts holding the starter in place with PB Blaster.
  3. I then loosened the two bolts holding the alternator in place. But I didn't remove the completely to make it easier to remove the first wire on the solenoid
  4. I then removed the solenoid power lead through the wheel well. I used an 8mm open ended wrench (if I remember right) since there wasn't enough room to get a socket in there.
  5. I then loosened the nut on the biggest wire (the lower one ) with a 13mm open ended wrench. But it was hard to get enough movement of the wrench....so
  6. I removed the two bolts holding the starter in place from underneath the truck. These were pretty easy using a 13mm socket and a long extension.
  7. I separated the starter from the engine and held it with one hand while I unscrewed the 13mm wire with the other. Separating the starter made it possible to get a socket onto the solenoid bolt which made it much easier to remove.
  8. After the wires were removed I went under the truck to remove the starter. It was pretty easy but only because I read the notes on here first. First rotate the starter end-over-end so that the gear end is facing up. After rotating it ~180 degrees it fit out the bottom.
As it turned out the wire connecting the solenoid to the starter had corroded and snapped. There is a chance this happened while I was removing it, but I'm pretty sure that was the cause of the failure.

Piece of cake. Now just have to buy a replacement tomorrow and reinstall.

Took me about an hour total to remove and install mine,I loosed up the the y pipe on the exhaust.When ever it warms up I`ll be doing it again cause I have tighten down a wire going to the starter cylinoid:icon_doh:

Just found my starter bad due to corroded wire from solenoid to starter motor. It actually fell apart. Im in the middle of doing a timing cover/ oil pan gasket and have axle removed so I actually swung right side axle tube bracket out of way to get it out.

Any suggestions on a replacement starter?

If it's the original starter, I would see if a local shop can rebuild it for you. We have had poor luck with replacement starters. The nose piece of most seem to be off just a bit requiring major shimming. Our local electrical specialist can usually rebuild most starters around $60-70.

This is a very old topic and it would have been best to start a new one. But since that was not done.

I have not had an issue with a replacement starter. Getting one rebuilt will take more time than it is worth. I replaced the starter in my Jimmy with one from Orielly over 3 years ago and have not had an issue since.

Well I bought a DB Electrical new starter from Amazon. Install went well and so far so good. Time will tell.
How do you know if shimming is required?
