Hey everybody...I was getting ready to pull the rear diff cover and lube but I noticed there may be a leak coming from the drivers side of the diff. What do you think?

That's not uncommon. Get a new cover for it. I paid less than $20 for mine at Advance. It will come with a new gasket and you will be good to go.

 

Thanks, I didn't even think about a new cover So no worries on the side of the diff?

 

meh i wouldnt worry about it.

Just get a new cover. there is 2 covers,one for a 7.5 and the 8.5. chances are u have the 7.5. hit up autozone etc. have em order both. then see if you can take em outside and compare.

 

That's just up-splash from the gasket leak.

DO NOT USE A NEW GASKET. Use Black RTV Silicone and bead it around the diff cover. Be sure the surface is clean on both sides, and all old gasket material is gone. If you suspect that your diff cover is bent, you can straighten it with a small hammer, and a flat surface.

 

Just did this yesterday on mine, I used the black RTV, no more leaks

 

I'm not saying anything is wrong with rtv (I've used it in the past myself) but please explain WHY NOT TO UsE A NEW GASKET! If you properly clean the surfaces, use a new cover, and torque it to spec in an even alternating pattern a gasket will work just fine.

 

i always used a gasket,with a paper thin coating of rtv on each side. never had a leak.

 

@Rex, GM recommends using the RTV, and not a gasket. Paper gaskets will heat up over time, and dry, and then crack.

 

Interesting! Well I guess we shall see how my new paper gasket holds up I guess. I've used them several times in the past with no issues so I'm still ok with them lol.
