Rear end rubbing noise on take off - 2005Jimmy
 

Got a rubbing noise which sounds like it is coming from the rear end. It's not a grinding noise like metal on metal or howling like a worn bearing. Did the brakes a few months ago and everything looks and works fine. Noise is only heard for first 100 yds or so and goes away.Usually happens just when vehicle is first moved for the day. Tried touching the brakes when I notice it happening and it seems to go away. Thinking brake pads or warped rotor (rotors were new too). Wondering if clutch packs in posi rear end make a noise because most noticeable when turning vehicle left at start up. Any ideas?

Found a link to the Toyota Tundra problem where they talk about "axle moan" which sounds like what I hear on mine. Seems to do it on slight turns when starting out and is attributed to the clutch packs in the differential. Solutions have varied by putting in the posi additive to changing out the insides of the diff. One fellow talks about a Blazer he drove that had this and eventually the rear end blew.
Any one else experience this noise, or just chose to ignore it?

Check the u-joints for wear.

Thanks rriddle3 but it's not a squeaking or clicking noise as I 've heard when the U-joints go and it's most noticeable on turns at low speed when starting up. It disappears as I speed up whereas a U joint noise should increase in pitch until a certain speed. It really sounds like the axle moan the Tundra drivers were experiencing. Going to check the rear end, brakes, and universals as well. Plan on chainging the diff fluid and will add some posi fluid in case it's the clutch packs in the diff (if not too late).
