Rebuild kit for 98 Blazer LT (dual piston) calipers
 

Hello all,
I'm doing some front suspension / brake work on my 1998 Blazer 4x2 LT. Seeing as I've never ran through the brakes on this thing since I've had it (it has 168k miles on it) and I wasn't sure of what condition everything was in, I wanted to put new pads / rotors, bleed, etc. In backing up the caliper on the drivers' side, I noticed brake fluid starting to leak from the spot between the master cylinder and vacuum booster, so I purchased a new master cylinder to replace as well, as well as some new brake hoses. I've gotten the calipers disconnected from the vehicle and am about to do a rebuild on them, but can't seem to find where I can get a "rebuild kit" for these -- they appear to have two pistons on each caliper. Every place online I've checked seems to have rebuild kits that only have one piston, and the same with Autozone, O'Reillys, Pep Boys, Advance Auto, etc. Suggestions? I'm sure I'm not the only person whose ever run into this... Please help!!

With the low cost of professionally remanufactured calipers, rebuilding your own isn't cost effective anymore. These come with new pistons, seals, boots, all of the mounting hardware, and the mounting bracket, (which should be replaced at the same time anyway). Buying all that stuff separate is considerably more expensive than the cost of the entire reman caliper, plus you get a lifetime warranty. It's a no brainer. If you insist on doing it yourself, most auto parts stores can order the parts for you.

Thanks for your input! As much as I'm replacing already, I might as well just do that. I'm doing upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, idler arm, center link, sway bar links, new rotors, pads, master cylinder and a new radiator / flush. What's a few extra bucks to have it all new, right?

Your 1998 has ABS: After you replace the master cylinder, you will need to do the automated bleed, it is required, not optional. It requires a scan tool capable of initiating the automated bleed.

And how would one obtain a scan tool that can perform this automated bleed? All I've seen online is ones that cost in excess of $1000 capable of that.

How would you obtain one? Just like everyone else, buy one ;) El cheapo's start right around $1K, but if you take it to a shop, they'll run the bleed for you and it won't cost anywhere near $1K ;)
