Rise of rpms and drop of speed up hill.

Ok so about a month ago my 2001 blazer's CEL started flashing when ever i go uphill so ive rarely been driving it. Now when i go up hill the rpms go up and i lose speed avg about 25 mph up a steep hill. its also melting a pvc tee thing that hoses from the manifold(or at least i'm told) connect together. I hope someone knows what im talking about bc i cant afford to have it looked at for a while bc my new job pays weird.

P.S. i was told it was the catalytic converter but i doubt that plastic tee would be melting.

The loss of power is likely due to a vacuum leak...the melted pvc Tee. Replace the Tee and go from there.

The melted tee is due to a bad check valve or valves on the the manifold(s). This is part of the secondary air injection system. Surprised you aren't hearing it.

The lack of power sounds more like a random misfire under load as the CEL lights up.

Iv'e replaced it 3 times now, first lasted about a week, second lasted 3 days, and the last one gave me a trip to town and back.

I agree with AJBERT.
It melted for a reason. Its going to do it again until you correct the problem. All youre doing is replacing damaged components.

did you get the code(s) pulled? There might possibly be a code int here (besides the p0300) that tells you what else went wrong and why that tee is melting.

If you have the codes post them here. if you don't you should either get it to your local auto parts place and get them pulled (az does it for free) and then post them here.

and the loss of power does usually mean its a random/multiple misfire as AJ stated previously. But it could be a regular p030x code pointing at a direct cylinder.. best way to find out is to have the codes pulled.

As mentioned, the 'T' (item #19 in the attached diagram) is likely part of the AIR (air injection reaction) system and is melting as a result of one or both of the check valves (items #9 & #13) being bad. The check valves can blow due to too much exhaust pressure as a result of a bad catalytic converter.

The attached schematic of the AIR system can be found in Compnine.com's diagram database.

Determine which of the check valves is defective & replace it along with any of the elbow(s) & the 'T' and go from there. A leak in the AIR system can cause the O2 sensor(s) to read lean, causing all sorts of bad problems.

What would this sound like???I can hear like a rattling in the higher rpm range but only under load in neutural or in gear.

AJBert 12-18-2011 09:26 PM

It will sound just like an exhaust leak, because that is what it is in a sense.
