You're not confused You have it right, except for the years: 1995 & older, (CMFI) oil fill is on the left side. 1996 & newer, (CSFI) oil fill is on the right side.

Any one who is in 2021 I recently had this same issue. My solution... I made it a snub nose! Ha It just didnt fit so i simply removed the stem and just used the cap. Then again maybe thats why it hasnt started since?
