I would bet you have a problem with the window itself. Opening the window should really never be a problem as it has the weight of the window to help the motor. Closing the window is often where things go bad which is how you say it is now.
I would say you need to get inside the door and have a look at the regulator. Since you have noted that it makes a growling noise when going down, it sounds to me like there is something restricting the window which could be a problem in either the regulator itself or in one of the channels the window rides in. I have seen the window channels break and/or loosen up causing the window to fall out of the channels and bind up only to slip back in when it's down. While you are in there, you can also test the power/ground at the motor to see if there is an issue with the circuit, but at this point I kind of doubt that is the problem although it is easy enough to check & say for sure. You'll be looking for excessive voltage drop while you are attempting to operate the window.
