Temperature gauge not working

2005 Jimmy - temp guage stopped working the other day. Still getting good heat to cab (winter). Probably some open wiring somewhere. Can anyone tell me where the sensor is on the engine (near thermostat?) so I can start tracing back to firewall?
Thx.

The temperature sensor itself may no longer be working. It is located near the thermostat on most engines and is cheap to replace.

For your year 05 it will be located on the drivers side cylinder head between the back 2 spark plugs, on earlier years like my 97 there was also one by the thermostat but that was for the pcm and not for the gauge, on your 05 there should not be one by the thermostat as that was eliminated as the one in the cylinder head is now used for the pcm and the gauge

Thanks, appreciate the response.

Thanks Nvidia78, will check it out.

You can see if the gauge is working by taking the wire off the sending unit and connect it to ground with a jumoer wire. Then don't start it but turn the ingition switch on. If the gauge starts moving up the gauge should be ok. Only do this long enough to see if the gauge moves do not leave the switch on for very long.:icon_wink:

Assuming the wire is not broken or disconnected it may just need a new sending unit.

I know this is a 8 year old post but I figured I would ask anyways lol, my 95 blazer temp gauge when sensor is unplugged and running the gauge is all they way cold but when the sensor is plugged in and running the temp gauge goes all the way hot and I already replaced this sensor and it does it with the new to so I tried grounding that wire that goes to the sensor and the gauge stays at cold so is my gauge broken itself because it doesn't make sensor why it goes up with the sensor plugged in but does nothing when grounded

I just had to replace mine.

Well I just had to replace the entire cooling system, actually. My oil and coolant was mixing together and my intake was completely corroded on my 2000.

I would rather separate the problem using a dongle and reading the engine temperature via OBD. As far as I remember, if the engine does not heat up within a time, an alarm is raised.

I have a 98 blazer 4x4. The temp gauge, fuel gauge and low fuel light is on and the gear indicator light quit working. I read somewhere on the Forum about replacing the # 15 10 amp fuse on the box of the driver side dash. I did that and everything was normal again, that is until I turned off the engine to get gas. I restarted the vehicle and it went back to not working... Any ideas or suggestions? I could, but don't want too, just keep popping in a new fuse every time I drive it...
