Do your plugs exit out the top of the distributor or the sides? If they exit out the sides, then your timing cannot be 'set' like in the old days.

i've got the old style with the pisn sticking straight up.....the sticker under the hood says it's adjustable.......if you are sure that the connector is under the carpet on the passenger side, i'll yank more of it up......i'd really like to have it set right for once!

It shouldn't be hard to find. Look more towards the center of the transmission hump at the firewall. I believe its a brown wire.

I misspoke, it's tan with a black tracer according to this picture:

tried putting the timing light on it....looking just above the ps cap and below the alt there is a spot where you can see the timing pointer....too bad i CAN'T see the nice little white line i made!..back and forth.....nuthin.......crawled underneath to see if i could even SEE the line.....there it is about 3 inches away.....so i check to make sure i've got the number one wire.......it was marked up by the distributor....so i move the pickup to near the right front cylinder , ( which i beleive is the number 1 on all american cars)....and same story........so i found ANOTHER groove in the balancer....made that white too......now i KNOW i have the distributor put back in EXACTLY the way I took it out, but i also know that when this car was only 2 years old i had to take it in for a plugged EGR valve, and the chevy dealer had the intake off....i guess they put the dist back in wrong??? or am i doing something wrong? Thanks pat
