Towing with a 2003 Blazer Xtreme
 

This question was asked sometiome back with no real answer given:

"Does anybody know why the towing limit for a 2003 blazer xtreme is 2000#? I've seen some websites claim 5000# but recently found in my car manual that its 2000#...... I'm just wondering why it is so low when the other blazer aren't"

I just bought a pristene 03 Xtreme and was shocked to see the low tow limit numbers for the Xtreme, less than 1/2 of the standard versions.

Any clues what to do to get to the higher figure????

My guess is because of the lowering springs that they use has a lower capacity. But that's just speculation.

Even the "normal" Blazers are never good candiates as a tow unit! Nothing beyond about 3000 lbs can be safely towed by these cars-and that is what they are:a full frame car that weighs only 4400 lbs! Do the math and then look at GM recommendations. It would be foolhardy to pull a wagon as heavy as they say these units can safely do-a very unsafe scenario besides the occaisional light boat! I have seen too many of these units on their side because of over zealous owners who think they own a truck:the S series Blazer is NOT a truck! 10 cents worth and done!

X2 on both replies! "Extreme" does not refer to towing capacity. Not a good candidate for a tow vehicle.

Actually the qestion was more rhetorical. While I was looking for a low mileage 2wd, 2 dr, Blazer to replace my aging 4 cylinder Sonoma, I just "happened" to come across a pristine, one owner, Xtreme, with only 53k on the clock.

That said, my RV trailer(s) would never approach, much less exceed 2000 lbs. Here is a pic of my molded fiberglass 1973 Hunter that I just finished restoring. At under 1000 lbs empty it might hit 1500 loaded and ready to go and even the Sonoma puilled it without problems. But, at 160,000 miles it was ready for lesser duties. Should I get close to that 2000 limit it looks like a set of air springs or extra spring leafs will be the order of the day.

I should have included this in my last post.

This 2003 Xtreme showed up at an Infinity dealer after it was traded in on a $40,000+ Infinity. It was the po's "Date car" and only went out on weekends.

It has but 53,000 miles, all posible options except an a/t (5 speed, Yea), a full set of service records and documents from new.
At under $8k out the door it should serve me well for the next 100k.....

Also might be because the car is lowered already and a tow would lower it even more, maybe drag something.

In other words, it's perfect! :icon_banana:

What if you look into so air shocks? Adjust while pulling the trailer, and lower while your not... but would have to carry a small air compressor to adjust...

Nice looking truck! Very clean and nice little camper also! You should have no problem power wise pulling it. Don L had a great idea on the rear air shocks...
