trailer hitch help...

hey guys,

hopefully this one will be pretty easy to answer...now that i've got my new zr2 home, i've been taking a good look at the trailer hitch it has to see what exactly i can pull with it (mostly because there's a nice little quad for sale down the street)...now the hitch frame is tubular, which i've never seen aftermarket, so i'm guessing it's a factory hitch. Is there a code on the glovebox sticker for the hitch option? what should I be looking for?

I've got underneath it, but there doesn't seem to be any markings anywhere on the hitch assembly that states the class or capacity...

thanks!

If there is no sticker on it identifying it as any particular brand and/or capacity, then it is mostlikely a factory hitch. If that is the case, then you should be able to read up on it in your owners manual.

I believe the RPO code for the trailer hitch is VR4.

The factory rated towing limit for a ZR2 is 4,600 lbs which would require a Class III hitch.

Yea I've got a factory hitch and its tubular. I believe Ive got the VR4 rpo code as well, but i'll double check that.

I've got an aftermarket tubular hitch ;)

But all the Blazers (even the 5 speeds) should have a Class III hitch... The HITCH is rated for 6000lbs.

The only Blazer that can tow that much, is a 4 door 2WD... 5,900lbs towing capacity, if I remember right.

2 door 4x4, automatic is 4,900lbs, and 5-speed is 3,900lbs.

Wait so the 4dr 2wd can tow more than the 4dr 4x4?

Does that mean the transfer case/shorter drive shaft are the weakest points? Or t-bars I guess..What other differences are there between the 2wd and 4wd to make up for the difference?

Only difference is the weight of the vehicle. There is about a 300lb difference between a 2wd and a 4wd.

This is straight out of a 2000 Blazer Owner's Manual:

Exactly... the 4x4 components add weight... You have to subtract that from the vehicles maximum weight moving capability...

You can kind of squeak around it with changing to steeper gears, but... Not a whole bunch.
