Transmission fluid change 1996

Hi
My 1996 Blazer has 72,000 miles. The fluid was changed at about 30,000 miles by my dealer around 10 years ago. Wondering what fluid to use and whether to have pan dropped to change filter and a flush. I am hoping to get a Dexron oil but so far service places do not use specific Dexron.fluid ( only have multi vehicle fluids GM , ford etc.)

The transmission is still shifting ok. No slippage. Thinking of changing fluid because of time since last service.

Appreciate your help.

I was just looking at my records and the 30,000 mile change interval is the same as recommended by the transmission shop that rebuilt my transmission. If I remember correctly they used some sort of synthetic transmission fluid. I would trust a dedicated transmission shop to know what fluids can be used. Such a shop will have the correct tools to do a proper flush.

I would NOT trust any sort of Jiffy-Lube place. They are clueless and do whatever the computer tells them to put in. They might be ok for oil changes but not a transmission.

Some would say that changing/flushing the fluid can make an old transmission not shift well. The argument is that the new fluid has solvents in it that will dissolve stuff on the clutch-plates that then allow them to slip. But at 72,000 with a flush/change 30,000 miles ago, I would think that your transmission would be fine for a flush.

Thank you for the reply. I called a local chevy dealer. The service adviser said they flush with new dexron fluid. He said to flush every 60,000 miles or 6 years. I think that seems about the right interval. Thanks again for the advice. I agree with you about being careful about transmission oil changes. One thing to be aware of is overfilling. Luckily the Blazers have dipsticks.
