won't go into gear

I was backing out of the drive way and tryed to got to drive and nothing. the shifter would move but would not change gears. I had to get under and shift it by hand. can any one help me??????:icon_hyper:

Is the shifter rod connected at both ends? Is it a floor shift or column?
