Yes you can under power a sub and it will hurt it in the long run.

"underpowering" a sub in and by itself will not harm anything. If you properly set the gain on the amp and have the correct settings on your head unit, you will never have a problem. Most often where people run in to trouble is when they believe they can get more out of it and think the gain is a volume ****.

when you purchase a sub and it says (for example) that it is rated for 350rms, that means that the manufacturer thinks that is the optimum constant average power the sub should receive in an enclosure built the the specs they also recommend. Once you deviate from those enclosure specs, the power handling of the sub changes (to a degree). Also, an amp never (unless in a complete perfect world) produces the same constant power. It fluctuates constantly. Some times it "overpowers" and others it "underpowers".

No you cant, and no it wont.

That is a myth. If it was true, you would be damaging your speakers every time you turn the volume down. Don't make me explain this to you, because I really would rather not.

I smoke like a chimney, so it wouldnt last long in my truck. However I like the idea, and am interested to see how it turns out as you get it finished.
