Not sure about the parking brake but there should be a 12v line in the wiring harness to give power to the radio when the vehicle is off so it keeps settings. I would double check that wire and make sure its not damaged or a fuse is blown somewhere.

When I wired my unit I found the wiring colours were different to anything I could find on the net. My was reseting everytime I turned the car off too so I had to mess around with the wires till I found the constant 12v and Acc. I didn't hook up the hand brake and I can still watch dvds but I have a pretty cheap unit. I'll be taking my unit out again soon so I can post the wire colours for the unit and see if its the same as yours (I have a 99 Blazer).

the bypass is well worth the money. its so much easier to hook that up instead of running all kinds of wires to this and that. did you buy a wire harness? because then the colors would be different if you didnt.

to bypass it thats all you need to do is hook the yellow wire to a ground and a switch

There's a procedure to permanently bypass duals. not just grounding them. I'd rather not share it since i have to drive on the same roads as you.
As for the wiring

You will obviously want to verify wiring with a multimeter.
