Adding more than 4 speakers
 

im just wondering how I would install more than 4 speakers, cause I heard that installing more than 4 will blow a head unit. I’m looking to install 2 speakers on the dash board, since there’s already empty speaker cutouts there. Would I have to get an amp and then hook the amp up along with the 2 speakers? Any help would be nice. Thanks!

What year is your truck? There should be wires going to the dash for 4x6 speakers, or tweeters...

but other then that, I would install a small amp, just to have the extra comfort and security.

edit: if the wires are there you wont need the amp.

If correct you have right now 4 speakers, guessing 5.25/5.5 size at 4ohm in each of the 4 doors. Normally the dash had 2 tweeters or 6x9 depending on configuration from factory. No matter where you add them, if wire there or not the issue is impedance. Adding an extra speaker to either the front left/right or rear inline with the existing ones will damage the head unit or if not certainly sound bad. You would have to match the impedance which in simplistic description- 2ohm at each door and 2 ohm at windshield for a total of 4 ohm on each channel but there’s more to it than this, just simplifying for now. If the system right now is 8ohm, similar situation- say 8ohm each speaker in rear and the 4 in front would be 4ohm a piece. Adding them thru the rca output jacks if headunit has them to a amp then speakers may work depending on amp configuration. (1 channel usually solo sub vs 2 channel for twin speakers but needs a amp regardless). Sound wise I can not tell you if better or not, I use just the 4 doors and a single speaker sub box with amp in rear cargo area which is a common configuration to go with. My 98LS has the tweeters in dash by windshield but are unplugged/disabled.
